With Apologies to Beethoven
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person who was awestruck by Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. Beautifully disturbing. Bitter-sweet candy for the senses. And that soundtrack... yum. For years I had wanted to make a synth version of Moonlight Sonata, or any of Beethoven's music, or any classical piece for that matter. In 2017 I finally put it together. This is an attempt to recreate a little bit of that magical feeling I still get when I hear Wendy Carlos' soundtrack for the movie.
This recording was created by playing the piece on my yamaha P-45 piano while recording the midi output via usb. I then seperated, and in some cases duplicated parts of the original performance for a total of 11 different tracks, each track associated with it's own soft synth. Additional harmonies were also added (For Shame!). The final mix took quite a bit of time to put together, mainly as a result of tweaking the character/tone of the different synths so they would work together in a way that I was happy with. My main goal with this piece was to create distinct voices within the music, each voice contributing to a feeling of distopian lamentation.
No doubt sacrilege to some, but I'm happy with the result.
